High-Dose Flu Vaccine May Cut Alzheimer’s Risk by More Than Half in Adults Over 65

High-Dose Flu Vaccine May Cut Alzheimer’s Risk by More Than Half in Adults Over 65

Choosing the high-dose influenza vaccine over the standard formulation may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by more than half in adults over 65, according to new research published this month — findings that could reshape vaccination recommendations for older Americans.

The study, which analyzed data from tens of thousands of Medicare beneficiaries over multiple years, found that recipients of the high-dose flu vaccine showed markedly lower rates of Alzheimer’s diagnosis compared with those who received the standard-dose formulation. While the researchers cautioned that the study is observational and cannot prove causation, the magnitude of the association — more than a 50 percent risk reduction — was described as statistically robust and consistent across subgroups.

A Growing Body of Evidence

The findings add to an expanding body of research suggesting that vaccines and other immune-modulating interventions may have protective effects on cognitive aging. Earlier studies have linked the shingles vaccine to a reduced risk of dementia, and researchers have proposed that inflammation — long implicated in both infectious disease and neurodegeneration — may represent a shared biological pathway.

A separate study published this week by scientists at the Weizmann Institute in Israel challenged longstanding assumptions about the relative influence of genetics versus environment on human lifespan, finding that genetic factors play a substantially larger role than previously estimated. The research suggested that individual genetic profiles may be more predictive of longevity than lifestyle factors alone — a finding with significant implications for personalized medicine and preventive care.

AI Transforms Clinical Workflows

On the technology front, Epic’s artificial intelligence system for clinicians is already embedded in care delivery at major health systems, cutting documentation time by up to 32 percent and speeding discharge summaries by 20 to 30 percent. The system is also demonstrating improved early lung cancer detection rates of 69 percent compared to the 46 percent national average, signaling a meaningful shift in how AI is being used — not just to reduce administrative burden, but to actively improve clinical outcomes.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services launched a digital health record system this week allowing Medicare enrollees to export their medical records directly to physicians or hospitals, a step described by administrators as a major leap toward patient-centered, interoperable healthcare infrastructure.

Prior Authorization Reform Gains Ground

Health insurers reduced prior authorization requirements by 11 percent following an industry-wide reform pledge made last year, according to a joint report from AHIP and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. CMS also proposed a new rule this week that would require insurers to respond to non-urgent prescription drug prior authorization requests within 24 hours, while publicly disclosing their denial rates — a move advocates described as a meaningful step toward reducing one of healthcare’s most persistent patient access barriers.

“AI isn’t just reducing administrative work — it’s actively shaping clinical workflows and accelerating time to treatment.” — OpenLoop Health Digital Trends Report, April 2026
