Small plane crashes at Kearny Mesa airport; 4 uninjured

Four people on board a small plane were uninjured when it crashed Sunday morning, possibly during takeoff, at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa, authorities said.

The incident was reported just before 10:25 a.m. at the small airfield off Aero Drive and state Route 163, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief Matt Nilsen said.

The plane ended up on airport property with bent landing gear, Nilsen said. He was unsure if the aircraft was taking off or landing at the time of the crash.

A photo tweeted by the Fire-Rescue Department showed the plane ended up in a grassy, open field, with damaged landing gear and its tail resting on the ground. But the body of the plane appeared undamaged.

The flight tracking website FlightAware showed the plane was due to take off from the Kearny Mesa airport, formerly known as Montgomery Field, around 10:30 a.m. and make a roughly 50-minute flight to Zamperini Field Airport in Torrance, in Los Angeles County.

FlightAware listed the plane as a single-engine Piper PA-28 Cherokee, a four-seat commuter plane.
