A 68-year-old driver died Tuesday after his SUV careened off a roadway and struck two houses in Bonita, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 9:30 a.m. on Corral Canyon Road near County Vistas Lane.
Authorities said the driver was headed north when he lost control of his white Nissan SUV and crashed through a property, then landed on the roof of a second house.
Fire crews arrived and tried to “stabilize” the vehicle to help the driver, but the man had already died, Chula Vista fire Capt. Josh Sanders told OnScene TV.
The driver’s name was not released, pending notification of his family.
No other injuries were reported.
Video from OnScene TV shows a damaged garage door at one property, and the front of a white SUV resting on top of a roof at an adjacent house.
The homeowner where the SUV landed told OnScene TV she was home at the time of the crash. She said she heard “big booms” and at first attributed the noise to the trash collection company. Then she felt “rattling,” she said.
“I thought it was an earthquake, so I run out … and realize that (the SUV) had hit my neighbor’s garage,” she said.
She said she worried about her neighbors but then noticed their vehicles were not in the driveway.
Corral Canyon Road was closed into the afternoon while authorities investigated the crash.
It was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, California Highway Patrol Officer Jesse Matias said, adding that the county Medical Examiner’s Office will complete a toxicology report.
