Organization Name
American Family Housing, previously known as Shelter for the Homeless

Organization Mission
Our mission is to provide emergency, transitional, and permanent -affordable housing, as well as counseling and life skills training, to equip homeless and low-income individuals and families to improve their lives and become self-supporting members of society.
Main Services Provided
Emergency Shelter for unaccompanied adults for up to 120 days through ISN (Interfaith Shelter Network) and SHIP (Self-Help Interfaith Program)
Transitional Housing for single mothers, families, and unaccompanied adults for 12 months to two years
Permanent Affordable Housing for clients who have achieved self-sufficiency. AFH makes every effort to place graduating transitional clients into our own affordable units when available.
Haven is our NEW transitional supportive housing program for unaccompanied adults who would like assistance with substance abuse, mental health, or other challenges that prevent them from becoming self-sufficient. Felonies, lack of employment, or being on probation are not barriers to entering the Haven program.
Accomplishments
AFH got its start in 1985 when Founder & Executive Director Jim Miller began delivering food, blankets, and clothing to those in need. AFH now has over 330 units of emergency, transitional, and permanent affordable housing. In 2008, we served 1,097 people.
Greatest Needs

Our clients are required to attend classes at our Midway City headquarters on Monday and Tuesday evenings. We are in desperate need of dedicated, reliable volunteers who love to hold babies and work with young children. Contact Joyce at 714-897-3221 x115 or jmurphy@afhusa.org.
